CANDELA PERU is the Spanish acronym for “Alternative Trade of Non Traditional Products and Development for Latin America – Peru”. We are a non-profit organization directed by a Managing Board of 5 members, which is itself overseen by the General Assembly (11 members).
CANDELA PERU is a Fair Trade organization which has based its activities on the principles and values of the Code of Ethics of the International Federation of Alternative Trade (IFAT). We committed ourselves to improve the living standards of the Brazil nuts gatherers through better income and to help build local capacity and empowerment. Aiming at efficiency, quality and innovation, we work towards the strengthening of the natural product value chains in Peru.
STRATEGIC VISION FOR 2011
CANDELA PERU will promote trade in natural products as a mean to generate value in the poorest regions of Peru. We will associate with local producers and collectors around productive activities, but we will also act as facilitators to bring them opportunities for development.
The depth of our experience with Brazil nuts will allow us to replicate in other areas of Peru with other products the intervention model that we have developed through our experience in the region of Madre de Dios.
All our activities are based on four strategic objectives:
  1. The strengthening of the organization.
  2. The economic sustainability of our organization.
  3. Leadership through quality and efficiency.
  4. Cooperation with other stakeholders to build local capacity
Candela has been a pioneer in Organic and Fair Trade activities:
  1. We were one of the first Peruvian organizations to belong to IFAT.
  2. We organized the first Brazil nut Organic Certification Program.
  3. We are part of the Fair Trade Certification system (FLO) as a processor and exporter of FLO Brazil nuts.
